Walkerton is a constituent city and devolved region within the Wiltshire Republic. The city was one of the original settlements that formed together to form Wiltshire in 3009 and has had a long history of political instability and a desire for independence, peaking during the Walkerton Conflict of 3019. However, since then the region has calmed significantly, voting for Gaius Selan to become President of Wiltshire in 3020.

Government

The government of Walkerton wasn't first established until 3012 with the Local Government Act which established Walkerton, as well as Juneville and the Alphenland as "administrative regions". This entitled them to take control over certain areas of government such as execution of education policy and local services. The first local elections in 3012 resulted in a Socialist administration, which was opposed to the national Conservative Government of Edward Jellico.

The government of Walkerton has evolved considerably since its formation as an administrative region. With the Second Local Government Act of 3020, Walkerton is split into two local authorities (Walkerton City and Banks Joint Air Base - Banks Base is administered by the Federal government). In addition to the local authorities, Walkerton is one of the "devolved cities". This means they elect not only the Local Authority, but a city wide government with a mayor. Currently, the Mayor if Rufus Kaine. The Walkerton City Council and the Walkerton Stadtrat are two different entities.

Walkerton City Council

The distinction in name is based on language, with the Local Authority taking the English version. The City Council elects 23 councillors from wards across Walkerton. The current make up being; 10 Liberal Conservatives, 5 Socialists, 2 Labour, 2 Communists and 4 independents. The Council members elect a Local Authority Leader, which is currently Joel Antwerp (LibCon).

The Banks Base does not have a local authority council as it is administered by the Federal Government as a national military base.

Walkerton Stadtrat

The Walkerton Stadtrat is the German version of the name and refers to the devolved government of Walkerton. The Mayor of Walkerton, Rufus Kaine, is a member of this and administers health, education, social services and public services throughout the city. The Stadtrat is made up of 48 members as follows;
