3021 Wiltshire Presidential Election

The 2nd Annual Wiltshirian Presidential Election was held between 30 June and 2 July 3021 to elect the second President of Wiltshire, to serve the term of 7 July 3021 until 13 February 3022. Incumbent President Gaius Selan announced on 15 November 3020 that he would not seek a second term in office as President, which saw a contested election in which Prime Minister Sonya Inyo was elected as the second President of Wiltshire.

Sonya Inyo was elected as the 2nd President of Wiltshire with 57% of the popular vote.

The presidency of Gaius Selan was extended due to the outbreak of the IDO/NCR war and, as such, the election was dominated by the war and the government imposed restrictions at the time. The government of Sonya Inyo had introduced a historically unprecedented level of wartime restrictions, covering almost all aspects of life from education, to rationing, to policing. As such, Inyo's position as the nation's "wartime leader" often overshadowed Selan himself. President Selan's trademark policy during his presidency was the growth of the Wiltshirian military, which was incorporated into governments of both parties. Notably, the Wiltshire Navy was formed and became a significant armada - which helped Wiltshire during the war of 3021.

In July 3020, Sebastian Bashira announced that he would stand as a candidate. Following that, a total of eight candidates would announce their intentions. However, only two made it to election day: Prime Minister Sonya Inyo and Former Minevgrad Mayor Kurt Antonov. While the election was mostly dominated by issues surrounding the general election, voters were cast between the pro-government Inyo alliance and the anti-government Antonov alliance. Inyo soundly defeated Antonov with a majority of votes on the first ballot and was sworn in as President on 7 July 3021.

Procedure

The only formal rules for the running of a presidential election comes from the Second Elections Act, 3020 which laid out the following criteria;

"On the first Friday of every February, the citizens shall poll to elect a President of the Republic. The following Sunday shall commence the President-elect's term in office."

"The poll in the election of the President shall be conducted by the Elections Authority and shall franchise electors aged 18 and older not otherwise prohibited from voting by incarceration."

The Elections Authority released the guidelines for the election as follows:

"Candidates for the position of President of the Wiltshire Republic require nomination from three-thousand signatories on a nomination petition in order to access the national ballot in the poll..."

"... much like in the 3020 poll, this will be conducted via a multi-preference ranked choice ballot, with the candidate requiring a majority of votes cast in order to be elected. The Wiltshire National Assembly is then expected to certify the results of the poll within three working days of the election."

These rules were amended due to the IDO/NCR war (surrounding the dates).
