The Labour Party (German: Arbeit Partei) is a centre-left political party in Wiltshire that has been described as an alliance of social democrats, progressives and trade unionists. Labour was founded in 3019 by Rita Smith following a major split in the Socialist Party. Since its founding, Labour has governed Wiltshire for a third of its existence.
Following Labour's founding, it formed a coalition government with the Socialist Party. The government, led by Rita Smith, further incorporated Wiltshire's membership of the Novanite Federation and marked Labour as a truly pro-Novanite party. Despite remaining the largest party in the next election, by June, Fillmore Grey had formed his national coalition and Labour were returned to opposition. During this period of opposition, Ioannis Kruger led the party and led the opposition. Throughout the September Mutiny and the social and economic depression that ensued, Labour continued to be a force for reform throughout Wiltshire - eventually shifting its position on the Novanite Federation.
It was during this time that Henry Campbell-Trenneman took over the leadership of the Labour Party and would begin a campaign for a democratic socialist government to end the political and economic uncertainty of the fall of 3019. Campbell-Trenneman's message was fresh and his promise of a final referendum on Novanite membership was seen as "the light at the end of the tunnel", which became Labour's unofficial campaign slogan in November 3019. Campbell-Trenneman's Labour Party was elected to lead a minority government.
Campbell-Trenneman's government was a brief pause from uncertainty that many Wiltshirians wanted. It saw very swift and large social reforms such as the Homes for All act and a clear pathway to universal healthcare. However, it wasn't meant to be. In December 3019, the New Corporate Republic invaded Wiltshire and conquered the cities of Wiltshire, Walkerton and Minevgrad. Washington remained independent, due to its geographical separation and closeness to the Oscdean State, and this is where the Labour Party continued to operate.
After Campbell-Trenneman's death in the Culling of Parliament, Mark Edwin - the leader of the Washington Council Labour group - was chosen to lead the party. Edwin's leadership was boldly and loudly in favour of President Gaius Selan's government-in-exile. Edwin is credited with gathering major support from trade unions and the working class during the General Strike, which helped bring down the NCR regime in Wiltshire.
Since independence, Labour has operated as an opposition party to Audrick Hill's Liberal Conservative government.
