Mary, Queen of Balancía

From TCH Archive

Mary (Mary Isabel Maekar; born 1 December 3017) was the Queen of Balancía, having reigned between the death of her grandfather, Charles VI, until her abdication in 3022. Her ascension to the throne is considered to be one of the most bloody in Balancía's history, due to her uncle's claim resulting in the Blackfyre Rebellion - the largest civil war in Balancía's history. Following the Wiltshirian intervention in September 3021, Mary's claim was established to be firm, making her the undisputed Queen of the Rock. Mary was the first monarch in Balancín history to not rule an independent Kingdom, instead ruling under a power-sharing agreement with the Wiltshire Fifth and later Sixth Republics. Mary was the first Wiltshirian Queen, as well as the youngest since John, King of Balancía.

Upon her ascension, a regency was established due to her age. Initially, King William II of Lancastria was named as regent, owing to their close familial relation. However, following the attempted separation of the Church in Balancía from the Pontifical Church, King William renounced his titles as Protector of the Rock. It was then decided that Prince Antony Caliban (later the Duke of Sinacras) would serve as Prince Regent and Protector of the Rock. The Prince Regent served in this capacity until the end of Mary's reign.

In August 3022, members of the Church in Balancía were invited to the Council of Lancastria, in which the Pontifical Church attempted to mend the division of the church and reunite with Balancía. With Blackfyre gone, this was achieved and Pontifex Konstantin IX established the Balancía Rite. However, in order to maintain the stability of the arrangement, Pontifex Konstantin IX ordered that the Monarch of Balancía also serve as Legatus of the Rite. Thus, the Monarch would serve as head of the subdivision of the Church. However, by established tradition and law, a Legatus must be a male.

In order to smooth this transition, and to protect Mary from future conflict given her incredibly young age, the Prince Regent granted permission for Mary's abdication of the throne, which was cemented by an act of the National Assembly known as the Abdication Act 3022. Mary was succeeded by her cousin, the closest Pontifical male-line heir, Lucian Carlos. He ascended to the throne as King Maximilian II and was formally coronated on 18 June 3023.

Following her abdication, Mary was granted the title "Lady of the Rock" and permitted to keep the style "Her Royal Highness". Her official style following her abdication is "Her Royal Highness The Princess Mary, Lady of the Rock". Upon her future marriage, she will also be granted the additional title of "Duchess of Iberia". While many speculated that she would continue to live alongside the new King's family at the Iberian Palace, it was announced that she would move to Lancastria and would be raised at the Europe Palace at Mirkwood alongside the Lancastrian Royal Family, with the approval of King Edward. As the only surviving descendant of Lord Zacarias Maekar, the Duke of Mountbatten, Mary is also the heir to the Duchy of Mountbatten.
