The Accession Council of 3025 was triggered by royal dispensation on 16 May 3025 by King Maximilian II to decide the succession of the Iberian Throne. Widely considered by many as a snub to Maximilian's heir, Louis, Prince of the Newton, the Accession Council was given the prerogative to consider claims to the throne and decide on a path forward "in line with the will, spirit, and faithful journey of the Balancín Kingdoms". The remit made many consider this a traditionalist takeover of the line of succession.

The resulting divide caused two factions to emerge: The Queen's Gambit, primarily Rooks and Murcian loyalists who supported Alba's claim; and the Alekhine's Defense, primarily Pawns, liberals, and democrats who supported Louis's claim.
