The Walkerton National Party, or WNP, is a political party that operates within the Walkerton State. The WNP is currently the ruling party and controls a plurality of seats in the Walkerton Bundestag. The Chairman of the Walkerton National Party, Willem Heinberg, is the 1st Chancellor of the Walkerton State following the independence referendum. However, the Novanite Federation federal government does not recognise the Walkerton State or the Walkerton National Party as they believe that Walkerton is apart of the Province of Wiltshire (which it broke away from in the 3019 referendum). The debate is not closed however, as Novanite support is still strong within the city.
History
The WNP was formed in 3010 following the election of Jaresh Inyo as Conservative Prime Minister of Wiltshire. Inyo, who had won very few votes in Walkerton, won a majority of the vote and was unpopular within the borders. The City Government Act of 3012 gave Walkerton a new City Council (outside of the control of the central government) and so the Walkerton National Party began to gain small amounts of power.
In the 3014 elections, the WNP became the second largest party (behind the Wiltshire First Party, who has been historically dominant in the region) and so joined with the Communists and Greens to form a coalition. This was the first time Wiltshire First were not in government in Walkerton. They did regain power a year later in 3016, however. In 3019, Willem Heinberg's reformed WNP led the party to victory in the Local Elections which resulted in them forming a majority government. This led directly to the 3019 Independence Vote and to the declaration of Independence.
