A referendum is set to be held in Wiltshire to decide the national flag. The current flag, called the 'Commonwealth design', was modified to incorporate elements and symbolism of the Holy Roman Empire. The republicanism of early 3026 helped garner momentum for a change.
The long list
The flags and national symbols committee was formed by republican prime minister Audrick Hill in January 3026, before being continued by his Labour successor Patrick Rivers. The committee compiled a "long list" of designs from designers and contributors across Wiltshire.
The short list
The short list was narrowed down by a consultation of the government, the governor-general, and the National Assembly. It was among the short-listed designs that voters would choose between in a ranked-choice, instant-run off voting system. By the flag referendum act 3026, the incumbent flag -- the Commonwealth design -- and the prior flag -- the old republic design -- were to be included on the short list.
