The Coalition of Federation Planets, formally the United Federation of Planets, is an alliance of twelve planets throughout the Alpha Quadrant of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Coalition, while legally being a continuation of the United Federation of Planets, is considered a successor entity, being established following the Federation's defeat in the war against Chisel Enterprises for the control of Terra. Today, the Coalition is comprised of twelve planets, including Vulcan, Tellar, and Betazed. The capital of the Coalition is "temporarily" on Vulcan.
The governmental structure of the Coalition is significantly different to that of the former Federation: the Coalition is ruled by the Federation Council. Each member world is represented on the Council and the council elects the Federation President. Unlike in the former Federation, the presidency is not a significantly powerful office, with most decisions being routed through the Federation Council. The president acts as Chairman of the Federation Council. In addition, the Coalition is significantly more devolved than the former Federation: each member world has significantly more influence over governmental matters, with only few matters reserved for the Federation Council. This is as a result of the physical disconnect between many of the planets, with only a handful of ships capable of slipstream drive (mostly apart of the Coalition Star Fleet).
The Coalition is widely considered to be an extremely humanitarian-focused organization, with much of their operations focused on rescue and relief efforts in the aftermath of The Cataclysm. The Coalition's territory is only a fraction of that of the former Federation. However, the organization is still associated with many of the negative sentiments attached to its predecessor.
Etymology
The term "Coalition" was adopted around the year 3000 when Betazed joined forces with the Tellarites following the Cataclysm. The term was mostly unofficial, and their alliance was simply "The Alliance between the Planets of Betazed and Tellar". However, as the alliance quickly developed into a successor state to the Federation, the term "Coalition" was more commonly adopted.
While the legal name of the Coalition is still the "United Federation of Planets", most do not refer to the organization this way. In 3007, Federation President Qasr became the first Federation President to refer to the organization as the "Coalition". It has been common place since.
Despite the organization being widely accepted to be the "Coalition", the governmental organizations still retain the word "Federation" in their names: The Federation Council, Federation President, etc. This has led to the more wider name "Coalition of Federation Planets" to become the unofficial official name of the Coalition. Very few still refer to the organization as simply "The Federation", as this is widely accepted to refer to the former Federation.

Federation Council
The Federation Council is the executive and legislative head of the Coalition. It is comprised of 12 members (12 member planet representatives and the Federation President). The Council was established following the formation of the Coalition and has served as the leadership body ever since. Election to the Federation Council is a matter for the local planet administrations, with some opting for their Governor (planetary leader) to hold their council seat and others to hold some form of election. Each planet is allocated one seat on the council.
Federation President
The Federation President is the chairperson of the Federation Council and the head of state of the Coalition. The Federation President is elected by the Federation Council and serves a term of two years. The Federation President is the highest ranking civilian and military officer for the Coalition and is the Commander-in-Chief of the Coalition Star Fleet.
The incumbent Federation President is Ceris Olwen, who was elected to lead the Federation Council on June 30, 3019. Olwen is a moderate Humanist, allowing him to gain cross-party support behind his consensus-building personal approach to political leadership.
