U.S.S. Holmes (NCC-221-B), the third ship to carry the name Holmes, was a Crossfield Class starship operated by the Novanite Federation (FAF). The Holmes was named after Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional character, Sherlock Holmes, due to the coincidental similarity of the registry (221-B) with the home of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson (221B Baker Street). The Holmes was commissioned and launched on November 19, 3016 as one of the two first Crossfield Classes to enter service.

Construction and commissioning

The development of the Crossfield Class was first initiated by Socialist Defence Minister George Webber. In a press conference he stated;

"The future of space travel sits before us. Engineers from across Doggerland are coming together to eliminate the impossible, so today I am announcing the construction of two new starships. The U.S.S. Discovery and the U.S.S. Holmes. Both of the Crossfield Class." -Minister George Webber

The design was based on a 23rd century Starfleet design which was used as concepts for the USS Georgiou. However, the design was never finalised and so engineers based the Crossfield off this design. The design was finalised in May 3016. The U.S.S. Discovery was the first Crossfield to be laid down (July 31, 3016), however shortly following this the Holmes was laid down on August 10, 3016. Construction was swift, with little interruptions or delays. The Discovery was completed first, with the Holmes being completed three weeks later. Both the Holmes and the Discovery began their space trails on September 6, 3016.

The space trails showed positive results and the Holmes was launched into service on November 19, 3016. Captain Terrance Cruz was the first to command the Holmes, however, Captain Andrew McNeill would take command shortly following the launch.

Fate

The Homes was destroyed on the 25th of March, 3016 following an error with the ships Warp core. Official FAF report states the connection of untested Nitronium based weapons were directly linked to an overload in the anti-matter injection system, which resulted in a full-scale warp core breach. All hands were lost, including Captain McNeill.

Awards

The Holmes received the Presidential Unit Citation in 3019 for "continued and consistent excellent service" following it's take over by the Novanite Federation in 3019. Captain McNeill received the Presidential Medal of Valour, becoming the first Starfleet officer to receive the award under the new Novanite President.
