A leadership spill for the republican caucus in the National Assembly was held on 26 January 3026, following a challenge to the leadership of former prime minister Audrick Hill by Ray Banes, who won a by-election to return to the Assembly in the day prior. The contest was joined by nationalist backbencher Gordon Teal, who advocated for imperioscepticism and the re-annexation of Shipley and the Newton.
The spill motion required that the leadership be vacated and voted upon. As such, the winning candidate required a majority of the party room to back them in order to be elected. The last-place finishing candidate in any given round was eliminated from consideration, and voting was expected to continue until a single candidate emerged with a majority. The number of republican assemblymen at the time of the leadership spill was 24. As such, a majority was 13.
