The Principality of the Newton, or as it is more colloquially known, Newton, is a region of the Balancín Kingdoms that borders on north Winden. Newton is home to Port Eddington, as well as the Newton River. Previously a city within the Wiltshire Republic, the Newton declared independence during the Doggerlands Crusades by King Maximilian the Crusader.
Following its inclusion in the Balancín Kingdoms by the Royal Charter, the Newton was reorganised into a principality. King Maximilian described the decision as "giving an opportunity to the heir apparent" to have a hand in governance. The Prince of the Newton, therefore, is a title that has become linked to the heir apparent, alongside that of the Duke of Talaga. The current Prince of the Newton is Louis.
The creation of the principality solidified the plans created by the Wiltshire Republic in separating the Shore Oil Fields into its own corporate zone. By the Royal Charter, the Shore Oil Fields were created into an incorporated Guild with significant autonomy and legally separate from the principality.
Corporation
The Principality Company, named after the principality itself, is the subsidary to the Crown that functions as the Prince's portfolio and source of his income. The Prince and Princess of the Newton, with a managing stake in the Principality Company, draw upon profits to fund their work and their lifestyle. Created in 3023, the Principality Company has financial ventures both inside and outside of the Newton, including property stakes in Southern Bonitana, Ecclesia, and Marino.
Prince of the Newton
The title of Prince of the Newton was created in 3023 by King Maximilian II to act as the administrator of the principality, as well as to signify the holder's status as heir to the Iberian Throne. The title is, legally, a new one, having been created by letters patent in 3023. However, it draws some lineage from the previous title "Earl of Newton", which was a subsidary title to the Duke of Belemadena between the 28th and 30th centuries. Earls of the Newton were not considered heirs to the Iberian Throne.
The Prince of the Newton is a title equivalent to that of Duke or Duchess. However, unlike Dukes and Duchesses, the Prince of the Newton is entitled to the use of a coronet at official functions. Given the association of the title of Prince of the Newton with the heir to the Iberian Throne, the title is expected to only be held by males. The title "Princess of the Newton" is reserved for the wife of the incumbent Prince.
