President of the United Federation of Planets

The president of the United Federation of Planets, commonly referred to simply as the Federation president, is the executive head of state and head of government of the United Federation of Planets (and later the Coalition of Federation Planets). The Federation president leads the Federation Executive Council and appoints the commander-in-chief of Starfleet.

Since the founding of the Federation in 2161, there have been 39 Federation presidents (30 during the First Federation, 3 during the Second Federation, and 6 during the Coalition). Over time, the presidency has seen a battle of executive power, with certain eras seeing the Federation Executive Council hold significant influence. The presidency's direct management of Starfleet has always kept it reserved a significant amount of authority. Unlike many executive offices, the Federation president cannot veto legislation of the Federation Council but, given his position on the council, can often exercise his personal influence to sway the results of certain votes.

The Federation president is elected indirectly through the Federation Council to a two-year term (cut down from a 4 year term during the First and Second Federations). During the era of the First Federation, the position of Federation vice president existed. However, with the Second Federation, the role of vice president was simply held by the most senior non-presidential member of the Federation Council.
