3021 Wiltshire Labour Party leadership election

The 3021 Wiltshire Labour Party leadership election was triggered by the death of Prime Minister and Labour Leader Jake Simpson during the loyalist-terrorist attack on 9 August 3021. According to the party rules, the election of the Labour leader is a two stage process: nomination by Labour AMs and then election by the party membership. As of August 3021, there are 98,000 members of the Wiltshire Labour Party.

The Labour Party national executive confirmed that the nomination process would begin on 12 August 3021 and would close the same day. Then, the candidates which reach the required 15% support for nomination will be put to a ballot of the leadership unless a single candidate achieves a majority of the parliamentary party support. In order to be nominated, a candidate requires 15% of the parliamentary party's written support - 5 votes. In order to win the election outright, a majority is required - 18 votes.

The first candidate to announce their intention to run was the Home Minister and former Chairwoman of the Labour Party, Liesbeth Margo. Catherine Morgan, the Mayor of Minevgrad, announced her candidacy and quickly became the frontrunner. Catherine Morgan was elected Leader of the Labour Party and was appointed Prime Minister.

Process

The first stage of the leadership contest is the nomination stage. Candidates require 15% of the parliamentary Labour party to sign a written declaration of support in order to be nominated. Only nominated candidates can proceed to any future steps.

In the event that a single candidates achieves a majority of the written nominations, or is the only candidate to reach the 15% nomination threshold, then that candidate is automatically elected as Leader of the Labour Party.

In the event that no candidate meets the above requirements, a ballot of the Labour Party members will be held with all nominated candidates. In order to be elected Leader of the Labour Party, a candidate must receive a majority of the ballots cast in this election. In the event that no candidates reaches a majority, second preferences will be considered with the lowest-returning candidate being eliminated. This process repeats itself until a single candidate receives a majority of the ballots cast or is the only candidate who has not been eliminated yet.
