Pontifical Territory of San Mendoza

San Mendoza, an enclave located entirely within the boundaries of the Kingdom of Southern Bonitaña, is the only Pontifical Territory of the Pontifical States. At 0.143 square kilometers, the territory is the smallest province of the Pontifical States. It serves primarily as the winter home of the Pontifex, as well as a diplomatic setting between the Pontifical States and Balancin Kingdoms, and is largely closed off from the public.

History

UCGB-NCR

The region was once a part of the capitol complex of the United Cities of Greater Bonitaña from 08-20-3018 until it's dissolution in 01-03-3019, after which the complex served as the state capitol of Bonitaña forming a part of the Southeastern Commonwealth of the Neu Corporate Republik (NCR). After internal dissent aided the capture of Bonitaña by the International Defense Organization, the NCR glassed the surface of the province on 07-12-3021, obliterating nearly all of the structures in the territory.

Post Glassing

After the glassing, the territory was rendered an unincorporated wasteland. Following the discovery of valuable properties from the material of the glassed surface however, several nations including the New Almere Republic, Sixth Wiltshire Republic, and Republic of Paxem all laid claim to exclusive economic zones within the region to conduct mining operations.

Restoration

A government coup and ensuing civil war between Rockfield and Wiltshire ultimately resulted in Rockfield attaining independence and securing the economic zone for Rockfield, later incorporating the zone as the Kingdom of Southern Bonitaña, forming the Balancin Kingdoms. A large sector of the region was then withheld from mining activities to be restored into arable farmland and civil development space. The area of San Mendoza was granted to Lord Jon Alba, forming a part of the Duchy of Alba within Southern Bonitaña. It was soon after built up into a small fortress platform, which required filling in large quantities of imported soil over the wasteland to render it farmable again, upon which the Castillo San Mendoza property is now situated. The property was transferred finally to the sovereign rule of the Holy See by King Maximillian II on 04-10-3024, and incorporated into the Pontifical States as the Pontifical Territory of San Mendoza.

Name

The territory is named after Saint Pedro de Mendoza, a Spanish conquistador, soldier, and explorer who lived 1499-1537.

Properties

The main feature of the territory is the Castillo San Mendoza, a small castle situated on a hill of the remaining infill soil leftover from the restoration, where the Pontifex resides for most of the winter. Due to the glassing this makes the restored hill the tallest natural point within Southern Bonitaña. The Castillo has a state dining room, throne chamber, chapel, and several bedrooms and offices for the Pontifex.

Additionally the territory has its own train station connected to the BlackCon Rail network, however it is not publicly accessible. Stationed nearby is a small reserve of the Pontifical States Armed Forces, who also serve as the border protection force for the territory.

In addition to the chapel within the Castillo, there is a larger standalone chapel in the center of the territory dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, where the Pontifex says mass when he is residing in the province. Just north of the chapel is the House of the Governor which incudes the administrative offices of the territory. For additional workers in the territory, there are two further dormitories along the Eastern wall.
