Harren was born to the Lord and Lady of Pyke as their second son. His elder brother, Eueron, became Lord of Pyke at the age of twenty. However, he did not serve long as Eueron attempted to marry Lady Olenna Osborn-Brooks, the betrothed of Prince Jaehaerys Osborn-Brooks. This caused him to lose his Lordship at the hands of Queen Elisa the Bold. Harren became the Lord of Pyke following his and married Lady Susa Fentch, commonly known as the toad of the Vale.
Harren's early rule of Pyke was uneventful. Until the Tale of Two Kings between King Daeron the Dragon and King Edgar. Harren, along with Eddard Greyjoy, the Warden of Isles and Rivers, supported King Daeron and House Osborn-Brooks of Dragonstone. When Daeron lost the throne, Harren became enraged. His ships were used during the war and he lost big, with the Greyjoy's bending the knee to Edgar shortly after the Battle of Stokeworth.
House Hoare
House Hoare is a noble house in the Kingdom is Isles and Rivers and formerly bannermen to House Greyjoy. House Hoare ruled the Isles and Rivers for hundreds of years before Arthur's Conquest in 102 AC when they resisted Arthur's rule. The last King of Isles and Rivers, Ardilac II was of House Hoare. House Hoare was removed from power after refusing to bend the knee to King Arthur. House Greyjoy was installed as Wardens of Isles and Rivers.
House Hoare then, through diplomatic marriage to King Leopold I, were restored to their ancestral seat as Lords of Pyke (Pyke being the former Capital of the Kingdom of Isles and Rivers). The head of House Hoare at the time, Lord Tyros Hoare (the son of King Ardilac), renounced their claim to the throne when his sister married King Leopold.
Since this, House Hoare served under House Greyjoy. Fighting in wars such as Robert's Rebellion (on the side of House Baratheon) and the Tale of Two Kings (on the side of Daeron the Dragon). However, in 1580, House Hoare declared themselves the heirs to the ancient thrones of Salt and Rock, the Kings of the Isles and Rivers (with Harren the Black being the first King since Ardilac II).
Many dispute this claim, however they have a rising amount of support and House Greyjoy are still unpopular due to their loses during the Tale of Two Kings.
