John, King of Balancía

From TCH Archive

John (8 May 2820 - 20 October 2829) was King of Rockfield and the Newton for most of his eight-year life. As the youngest monarch to ever rule, John did little governing himself. His reign is often regarded as the end of the feudal period of Rockfield's history and his death in 2829 was the catalyst for the Pius Revolution which saw his mother, Elisa Pius, declare herself Queen over the legitimate heir (John's cousin, Antony Edmund).

John was born in 2820 as the second son of King Maximilian and Queen-consort Elisa Pius. In November 2821, the Annus horribilis continued with Banquet Day, which saw the deaths of John's older brother (the heir to the throne) Prince Philip Martell. Shortly after Banquet Day, a strange fever struck down John's father and his three sisters. King Maximilian's death put the one-year old boy on the throne, affectively leaving the Kingdom under the complete control of Elisa Pius. It was Elisa's dictatorial reforms that saw a sudden and shocking end to feudalism in Rockfield. John's reign is also considered one of the marking points for the solidification of Rockfield's decline and Elisa Pius' actions are also attributed this responsibility.

John was an extremely sickly boy and, due to his mother's paranoia, was seldom allowed outside or near other people. It is believed that he was breast-fed for his entire eight-year life and never attended any education. Even members of the court, during his reign, were unable to meet with the King to help guide his growth and development. With his health, most began to assume that John would not survive adolescence and began preparing for the succession of the throne. This action was severely blocked by Elisa Pius who had Antony Edmund, the legitimate heir, branded a traitor and spread rumors of conspiracy against the boy-King. With John's death in 2829, Antony Edmund fled the country out of fear of Elisa Pius' actions. This started Elisa II's decade long tyrannical reign which ended with the Pontifical Crusade of 2840.
